Seawright Funeral Home and Crematory is only three years away from celebrating 100 years of compassionate service to the Inman and greater Spartanburg areas.
Lilly Seawright-Page, 14, has grown up in the family-owned business and knows that she will follow in the footsteps of her grandfather, Robert (Bob) Seawright, the current owner of Sea wright’s, and her father, Travis Page, who is the manager, and other members of the respected team of professionals at the funeral home.
What contributed to your decision to go into the family business?
Since I was a little girl, I have enjoyed going to work with my dad and papa. They would allow me to do random jobs around the office to help. I remember the first time I was allowed to go on a funeral. I was 11 years old, and I was given the responsibility of greeting people as they came in and handing out memorials. This day gave me the feeling that I had possibly found the career that I wanted to do for the rest of my life. My great-great-grandfather, H.W. Seawright, started the business in 1925, which means we will celebrate our 100th anniversary in three years. My family has worked very hard to be an accomplished and well-respected business in our community, and I want to continue that legacy.
What is your favorite part of the business so far?
My favorite part of the business is the opportunity to help families during a time of grief. I believe that the funeral business is not just a service – it is also a type of ministry.
What are some myths and false assumptions about the business?
I think that a big myth of being a funeral director is that it is a profession only for males. That is by no means true. Although it is male-dominated, that doesn’t mean a female isn’t as efficient or successful. Another myth I believe is out there is that all funeral directors are old, pale men who are always serious and straightforward.
Try to imagine your life 10 years from now. What do you hope that life will involve?
Ten years from now I want to be a licensed funeral director carrying on the business my family built and making a difference in my community. I want to have an impact on some one’s life that no one else can.
