If you’ve ever gone to a chiropractor, you’re likely familiar with the process. Generally, you lie down on a table and the doctor manipulates your spine into different positions, ending with a good crack of the neck for good measure.
Over the years, science has continued to evolve, and with it came less invasive procedures that allow people like Dr. Wayne Laney of Upstate Spine & Wellness, LLC, to precisely treat chronic back and neck pain with nonforced methods.
First introduced in the 1940s and later perfected in the ’60s, the Grostic Method gives chiropractors such as Dr. Laney much better tools to heal ligaments, drastically reduce pain and increase the quality of life of his patients.
While his journey compassionately caring for patients across the Upstate – as well as other states and worldwide – has been a positive one, it didn’t start out that way.
“What led me to pursue this practice was a life-changing accident that my wife and I endured in 1969,” he explained.
An unfortunate car wreck resulted in a severe whiplash injury that would define Dr. Laney’s life.
“She was getting about three hours of sleep after the accident and was on the strongest medication for pain they had at the time. Nothing seemed to help her,” he said.
With surgery on the horizon in the form of a laminectomy – a removal of the back of the neck to relieve “problems” – Dr. Laney and his wife were prepared for the worst.
“Two weeks before surgery, my uncle who lived in Alabama called my grandmother and heard about my wife’s accident and the impending surgery. Being a chiropractor who had practiced for many years, he was astonished to hear about the impending laminectomy,” Dr. Laney said.
“My uncle immediately said, ‘don’t do that’ and recommended we send him all the X-rays and information for him to evaluate.”
Dr. Laney and his wife ultimately decided to travel to Alabama for treatment, with Dr. Laney returning home to California for work and school while his wife stayed in the South to continue healing.
“After about a month-and-a-half she came back. She was walking better, off all of her meds and had dramatically less pain for the first time in three years,” he stated.
All of this was due to the revolutionary technique that uses precise analysis and adjustment to painlessly make upper cervical corrections and help alleviate back, neck, muscle and joint pain.
Dr. Laney uses a device called the Atlas Orthogonal Instrument, along with a Grostic-based technique, which means it focuses on measurements and gentle spinal realignment through precise, nonforced cervical correction rather than nonspecific manipulation or medication.
Many times, people go years without having their pain issues addressed because they don’t want to make it worse – or they try to ignore it because they don’t realize how much their quality of life will increase.
