What is a Neurologist?

A neurologist is a medical doctor that treats diseases, disorders and injuries related to the nervous system – both the central and peripheral nervous system. The nervous system includes the brain and spinal cord. Many people who also have problems with their senses, such as touch, vision or smell, may also need a neurologist.

What does a Neurologist Treat?

People with neurological conditions may experience coordination problems, muscle weakness, a change in sensation, confusion and dizziness. Along with people who are having problems with their senses, neurologists also treat people who have experienced a stroke; have epilepsy or another seizure disorder; multiple sclerosis; myasthenia gravis; infections of the nervous system like encephalitis, meningitis or a brain abscess; a neurodegenerative disorder like Lou Gehrig’s disease or Alzheimer’s; autoimmune disorders; and migraines or cluster headaches.

Treatment depends on the disease or disorder that the person is ultimately diagnosed with by a series of tests administered by the neurologist. The treatment plan is usually managed by the neurologist and other specialists, as well as a primary care physician.
