What does a Cardiologist Treat?

People are referred to a cardiologist when they experience symptoms of a heart condition, such as shortness of breath, dizziness, chest pains, changes in heart rate or rhythm and high blood pressure. They often treat patients who have had a heart attack, heart failure, or other heart conditions and diseases. They help make decisions on treatment plans, such as surgery, heart catheterizations, angioplasty or stenting.

People may be referred to a cardiologist even if they have not shown symptoms. If they have a family history of heart disease or high cholesterol, if they are smoker or have diabetes, they may be a good candidate to see a cardiologist.
